| BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Located in the SouthEast Portugal in the municipality of Castro Marim
(ALGARVE), Terramada has been a
Permaculture farm since 1985 devoted to
reforestation and soil recovery with trees, bushes and no till organic
vegetable gardens according to the Permaculture Design Principles and
Ethics.
The region is very quiet because theres a high degree of human
desertification (most people live by the coast - 12 Kms south -on
tourism related activities) so it's an excellent place to relax and
enjoy nature.
The main house is situated just by the water (only 5 mts away at full
water level) of a dam that feeds half the Algarve with drinking water. A
considerable part of the farm follows the water line of the dam making
it a very special place
On the inside part of the farm there are several irrigated orchards,
no till organic vegetable gardens, tree nurseries and sheds with tools
and materials used in the maintenace of the site.
All the plants and trees planted in the farm (a few hundreds) were
never chemically fertilized nor suffered from any kind of spraying. The
soil in vegetable gardens was never ploughd. A sheet mulch system has
been
used for many years using hays, straws, cardboards and several other
shredded organic materials and today the humus and life content of the
soil is much higher than the original rocky one, 21 years before.
There are plenty of terraces facing the lake, apropriate for
camping and pic-nics, a few have water and one has electric power.
